My first thoughts are that many heirlooms can be passed onto your children and/or grandchildren, for them to enjoy right now. There is no need to wait for heirlooms to be passed over in your Will. If treasures are deemed to be of value and money is tight, then there is nothing wrong with taking items to the auctioneers or to sell them through a private. Your relatives would understand, especially if circumstances dictate.
It’s important to remember though that if you have too many heirlooms, you will not be able to appreciate the items you love the most. You know the saying “You can’t see the wood for the trees.” It’s so important that you keep your most precious heirlooms, precious and that means storing them safely and carefully or displaying them in a manner that pays tribute to the heirlooms themselves.
I’m a fan of ornamental boxes. Homesense are amazing at offering the most beautiful boxes with bows, perfect for keepsakes and heirlooms. Storing your items safely and in a place where you can find them, means that you will probably find yourself looking at them more.
