There is nothing I enjoy more than putting my head on my pillow after a busy day. Throw in a water bottle and you have me very quickly into the land of nod and happy dreams before you can count one sheep never mind about ten.
However, what if your bedroom is your dreaded dumping space where the floordrobe has become a real thing, a place to store your clothes, given your wardrobe is overcrowded? Or maybe your jewellery box is not so much a box, but is now a cluttered, tangled mess of your jewellery and you find yourself despairing and buying more jewellery as you simply cannot be bothered to untangle key pieces?
Perhaps you are crying out the words Declutter my bedroom.
Or perhaps you are finding it hard to sleep. Does your room feel overwhelming, overcrowded, with lots of wires and electricals lying around? No wonder your head is still buzzing with all that electricity.
This is why I am my happiest when I am decluttering a bedroom, as I know how much a good declutter and sort out can change the energy of your room and turn it into a tranquil haven and a safe space in which to relax, unwind, and ultimately sleep.
First off, it’s important to recognise that there could be items in your bedroom that do not belong there. This includes suitcases, empty packaging, paperwork of any description, and electrical appliances (other than your hairbrushes etc). Neither am I a fan of a TV in your bedroom, but that’s my feeling – to me, the bedroom is for sleeping, all about calm not chaos.
There could be a time, and the time could be now, when you know it’s the right time to declutter my bedroom.
How to declutter your bedroom
Jewellery
We all have lots of jewellery but there are great space-saving ways to store it these days. @Stackers is a great brand with modular components so you can build your own unit. It looks attractive and keeps your pieces neat. I’m also a fan of jewellery stands, such as those from @OliverBonas, which have a stylish Art Deco feel and keep necklaces tangle-free.
Declutter jewellery often. Costume jewellery can go out of fashion quickly, so let go of anything you no longer like or wear. Keep valuable jewellery in its boxes, ideally in a secure place, along with certificates of authenticity.
Clothing
Clothing is more disposable than ever, with fashion constantly changing. Keep only the items that are good quality, fit you, look great, and that you love. Let go of the rest. Apps like @Vinted are great for selling clothes and making a little extra money.
The best way to declutter clothing is to put everything on your bed, then sort systematically, category by category. Let go of items that no longer fit or that you keep “just in case.” Draw a line in the sand and keep only the clothes that suit your style and size.
Other bedroom clutter
- Plants: Move them to another room – they use up oxygen at night.
- Screens & fairy lights: Use a screen with lights to brighten up the space and hide items like shoe stands.
- Gym gear: Keep only what fits and is comfortable. Sell or donate the rest.
- Shoes: Only keep your “best shoes” in the bedroom. Boots and trainers belong by the door or in a utility room. Shoe racks can keep things tidy and prevent damage.
- Makeup: Declutter regularly. Expired or old makeup can harbour bacteria. Keep products clean and tidy with a makeup organiser.
- Accessories: Store sunglasses, belts, and scarves neatly in bedside cabinets or linen storage boxes.
- Drawer liners: Freshen up drawers with scented liners that also look stylish.
- Laundry: Use a neat linen or laundry basket to keep clothes organised.
- Socks: Go through your socks pair by pair. Bin old or uncomfortable ones. Keep unmatched socks in a bag and reunite them if pairs appear within a few washes – otherwise, let them go.
- Books: Keep only your current read by your bedside and move the rest to a bookshelf.
The goal
The key focus of decluttering your bedroom is to create a beautiful, calm, uplifting, and restful space – because that is what your bedroom is meant to be.
Once it’s done, you’ll never again have to despair and find yourself wanting to declutter my bedroom, because your bedroom will already be a place of beauty and style.
With Love,
Beth
