Are you looking for tips to make working from home feel effortless and declutter office space? With so many of us now working remotely, having a workspace that truly works, and is tidy enough to support productivity, has never been more important.

When you declutter office spaces properly, you are not just tidying up. You are creating an environment that helps you focus, think clearly and get through your work with less stress.

Having worked as a PA since the age of eighteen, I have always understood the value of organisation. A clear desk, an efficient filing system, and the ability to locate documents quickly all make a difference. But I also know how quickly paperwork can build up, leading to overwhelm and a sense of chaos, which is far from helpful when you are trying to move forward.

Over time, and especially since becoming a professional declutterer, I have realised that sometimes the simplest methods are still the most effective when you want to declutter office spaces properly.

Start with a Simple System

My first recommendation is to invest in a good filing tray. They come in all styles now, so you can easily find one that fits your space.

Mine is divided into:
• Action
• Pending (awaiting a response)
• Upcoming (items needed soon)

Alongside this, I keep a notepad and printer paper within easy reach. When you declutter office systems like this, everything has a place and nothing lingers on your desk longer than it needs to.

Keep your Declutter Office Space to a Minimal

I use a pen pot, but only with pens that actually work. I regularly go through them and remove anything that is no longer useful, keeping only my favourites.

My laptop sits centrally, and aside from a diary and the occasional printed to-do list, my desk stays clear.

I do like a plant though. My money plant has pride of place and brings a bit of life into the space.

A clean workspace creates mental clarity. When you declutter office surfaces, you notice the difference almost immediately.

Tackle Paperwork Thoughtfully

Paperwork is often the biggest challenge when you try to declutter office areas, especially if you are running a business. While some documents do need to be kept, often for up to seven years, it is worth digitising as much as possible.

If you are managing household paperwork, you probably need far less than you think. Keep only what is essential:
• The most recent utility bill
• Receipts for short-term use
• Key documents such as birth certificates, legal paperwork or property records

Everything else should be questioned. Could it be scanned? Does it still serve a purpose? When you declutter office paperwork properly, you free up both physical and mental space.

Manage Emails Like Paper

Treat your inbox as an action tray. Unsubscribe from anything unnecessary, respond when needed, and then file emails into folders.

If you want to fully declutter office life, your digital space matters just as much as your physical one. A cluttered inbox can feel just as overwhelming as a messy desk and can slow you down without you even realising it.

Invest in Proper Storage to Declutter Office Space

If you do have a significant amount of paperwork, a traditional filing cabinet is well worth considering. Box files can work for a while, but they often end up overflowing.

Filing cabinets now come in a range of colours and styles, so they can complement your space rather than look out of place. Organise drawers by category such as work, personal or home, and only keep what you genuinely need.

When you declutter office storage properly, it becomes much easier to maintain.

Don’t Forget Aesthetics and Comfort

Your workspace should feel calm and reflect you, especially if you are on video calls. A tidy and considered background makes a real difference.

If possible, position your desk near a window. Natural light can lift the whole space. If that is not an option, create a backdrop that still feels calm and uncluttered.

Comfort is just as important. A supportive chair is essential if you are spending long hours at your desk.

A decluttered office is not just about appearance. When you declutter office spaces with intention, you create a space that supports focus, clarity and productivity. Keep it simple and you will feel the difference straight away.
