“Help me declutter” has probably been shouted out in despair many a time. But if you shouted out those words, would you expect to receive a reply?
The truth is, there are people out there now who are Professional Declutterers and organisers, and they really can help you declutter.
The thing is, these lovelies make light work of what can seem to be an onerous task.
Help me declutter is no longer a cry into the wind. In fact, once you find the right person to work with, you may never need to say those words again.
We all have clutter, whoever we are. But for some of us – especially those who are very busy – the clutter can build and build until your home no longer feels like a refuge but, instead, a place that stresses you out. It’s totally understandable that you might need outside help and end up typing “help me declutter” into the search bar.
Why we have clutter
The reasons are personal and individual. For some, it’s simply too much stuff. For others, it’s linked to trauma that makes it difficult to let go of things that no longer serve them. The best way to start decluttering is to understand why you have clutter in the first place – in other words, the root cause.
How declutterers can help
As for the practical side, most declutterers work with a similar methodology. Once you’ve decided to let go, the hardest part is behind you – and now the practical begins. That’s where decluttering professionals come into their own.
Our job is to keep you calm and find solutions. I normally create a plan with my client – one that works for both of us and that we can agree on. Teamwork is the name of the game.
Decluttering can be tricky, but with a willing accomplice and a positive attitude, mountains can be moved – even in a relatively short space of time.
A structured approach
The first rule is to decide which room you want to declutter first. Then, categorise everything within that room. This way, you’re left with smaller, manageable piles instead of one overwhelming heap.
You’ll also need the right equipment to hand, including:
- Bin bags
- Labels
- A thick marker pen
- Bags for charity donations
- A container for recycling
Next comes decision time. Each item will fall into one of the following categories:
- Keep
- Donate
- Sell
- Recycle / Trash
This is where gentle persuasion and guidance is so valuable, and where a professional can make all the difference. I am always empathetic with my clients, as I know how hard it can feel to let go of possessions we’ve had for some time.
What happens to your items?
Many of my clients worry about whether their items will just end up in landfill. The good news is that around 99% of cases can be recycled or reused. I always make a point of recycling everything I’m given – whether that’s dropping donations at a charity shop or passing them directly to people in need.
The benefits of asking for help
So, go ahead and call out “help me declutter”! Your home is your castle, and it deserves to be loved and cared for like everything else in your life. By decluttering, you’re not only adding value to your home, but also affirming that you deserve a space that’s organised, tidy, and a joy to come home to.
With Love,
Beth
