How often have you heard yourself say “I need help to declutter my home”?

Clutter can be overwhelming and, in some cases, can take over your life. It builds up over time and before you know it, what started off as a small pile of bits and pieces has exploded into a mountain that feels both unbearable and unbeatable. I meet many clients who simply cannot face tackling the mountain on their own. It is not uncommon to feel stuck and unable to move forward — which is why organisers and professional declutterers are now all the rage.

Although decluttering has now become quite the fashion trend, the benefits of decluttering have been known for many years, even before Marie Kondo came onto the scene.

In fact, APDO (Association of Professional Declutterers & Organisers) was set up in 2015 and has grown in stature since then. Those registered under this body are strictly vetted for ethics and skillset.

I specialise in ADHD clutter, PA work, home styling and design. Sometimes, decluttering is about more than just the “stuff” — it’s about reorganising your home and even giving it a complete makeover. I love helping clients create a beautiful home, with styling ideas and inspiration brought together on mood boards from magazines and online sources.

There is no shame in saying, “I need help to declutter my home.” Many people feel embarrassed by their clutter, but there is no need. Professionals bring empathy, fresh ideas, and zero judgement. In truth, our profession is still something of a best-kept secret — but it’s slowly becoming recognised.

But how do you even start to declutter your home?

First off, we get together and create a plan. Putting your clutter into categories helps get things started. That way, you can see how much you have of each type of item. For instance, you may have books scattered throughout the house — gathering them all into one room makes it easier to decide what stays and what goes. The same method works for clothes and almost every household item.

Working room by room is also effective. Breaking down the task step by step helps avoid overwhelm. I usually recommend clearing a space entirely and then “putting back” only the things you truly want and need. You’ll be surprised how much “extra” you’ve been holding onto that is actually just clutter.

Making sure everything is in the right place is another key to staying decluttered. Using logic helps — for example, keeping travel plugs, beauty bags, and holiday bits inside your suitcase. Next time you pack for a trip, everything you need will be ready and waiting in the right place.

Decluttering is also about mindset

Over and above the physical act, you also need to get your mind into the right place to let go. There are countless books that can help, but it’s simpler than you think. Remember: clutter causes overwhelm, chaos, and even costs you money. That knowledge alone should inspire you to create a calmer, more organised home that you love, rather than just tolerate.

This is where a professional comes in — someone who can gently help you let go, while encouraging you to make the right choices. We’ve all learned to gather so much stuff as humans that we lose sight of what really matters in life.

Your home is a living space, not a storage space

When you remind yourself of this, transformation becomes possible. Next time you catch yourself saying, “I need help to declutter my home,” remember there is a solution — your very own declutter fairy, ready to support you every step of the way.

It’s quite simply, what I love to do.

With love,

Beth
