I have recently been contacted by quite a few clients looking for a House Declutter Service. In other words, they want their whole home decluttered from top to bottom.

As overwhelming as this may sound, I am the woman for the job! If you are looking for someone who offers a House Declutter Service, it’s important to build a relationship based on mutual trust and respect. After all, inviting a stranger into your home to go through your belongings can feel a little daunting, but once that relationship is formed, things can flow really well.

I’m sharing a few client experiences that demonstrate what a true House Declutter Service can look like.

A House Declutter Service for Busy Family Life

One of my current clients has a full-on life. Not only does she juggle a full-time job, but she is also working hard on her dissertation. She also has a lot of animals. She is a human whirlwind, but in her words, “I cannot stand the clutter anymore. I find it hard to work in this chaos and need to create a calm home.”

At our first meeting, we discussed how the process would work. Despite the size of the task, it’s a case of chipping away, area by area, without overwhelming yourself with the mammoth project ahead. I’m a big believer in a place for everything and everything in its place. We agreed that this would help the home flow better and hopefully eradicate some of the clutter.

We identified that the utility room needed sorting, but my client’s main concern was a cupboard that had become a dumping ground for tools. She wanted it transformed into a craft cupboard for her daughter.

The “Cupboard of Doom”

On my first visit, we decided to tackle the “cupboard of doom”. When I say it was full, I mean really full.

One of the advantages of offering a House Declutter Service is that I can come into a home with a neutral perspective and suggest changes that can create an immediate impact.

We agreed that most of the tools could be neatly organised in the shed, category by category, leaving just one toolbox in the house with the essentials.

What was lovely was that we worked as a team. My client and her husband were both involved and, actually, he was rather good at letting go! Even he did not realise how much had accumulated in such a small space.

We cleared the entire cupboard, laying everything out on the lawn and slowly but surely, the plan came together. Most items were taken to the tip, while the important tools were organised into the shed.

We were left with an empty craft cupboard, which has now been painted and is about to have shelves installed ready for their daughter’s craft supplies.

Why Decluttering Rarely Goes to Plan

Even though I always create a plan when offering a House Declutter Service, the goalposts often change depending on what has happened that week.

With this client, we sorted the kitchen over two visits and have now moved into the living room. Each time I visit, more items leave the house, and that is progress.

Last week, my client needed the living room sorted quickly so she could focus on college work. Instead of decluttering, we shifted our attention to tidying and reorganising the space to make it more practical and workable for her.

In other words, we adapted to what was most important at the time, and that was fine.

We are now in a good flow. There is still plenty to do, but we will get there. The loft is next on the list, although we have agreed to wait for good weather so we can lay everything out on the lawn and work through it systematically.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t complain about their loft. For many of us, it becomes a dumping ground because it’s easy to move things out of sight and into storage.

When Decluttering Feels Emotionally Overwhelming

One thing we have discussed is the importance of other family members being on board too.

In fact, seeing the progress we are making, my client’s daughter now wants me to help with her bedroom as she plans to paint, decorate and completely restyle it. I cannot wait to help her. Watching positive changes spread throughout the home is always lovely to see.

Another of my clients was also looking for a House Declutter Service, although her circumstances are very different. She is in her seventies and finds decluttering emotionally overwhelming.

She previously lived with her mother, who had Dementia, and over time many items were bought to brighten up the home. However, what started as a few extra things gradually filled every nook and cranny.

My client wants to let go, although she finds the process difficult. I promised to be gentle with her, but I also encourage her to release items because there is simply no room left to store everything.

Given her age, we also agreed that clearing hallways and walkways was important to make the home safer and easier to move around.

Creating Calm One Room at a Time

We started with what used to be her mother’s bedroom, as we both agreed she wanted it transformed into a welcoming guest room.

It was filled with books, cushions, pictures and extra items that had slowly been pushed behind doors and under beds.

I won’t pretend it was a quick job. It has taken several weeks to get the room into some sort of order, but progress has definitely been made.

I always take donations to charity shops for my clients. It eases the pressure on them, and it feels good knowing the items may help someone else.

With this client, progress will be slow, and I have never promised an overnight miracle.

In her words, “I like everything”, but I gently reminded her that surely everyone has favourites. I know I do.

So, together, we are working through the process of letting go of the things she no longer truly needs.

Can a House Declutter Service Work Remotely?

Last week, I found myself back in Swanage working with a client who lives in Singapore.

I have worked with this client before. She is absolutely lovely but needed the support of a House Declutter Service from afar.

What has been particularly rewarding is that we have successfully managed the entire process remotely through WhatsApp and across a significant time difference.

I was first called in during 2021 when the family decided their Swanage home needed decluttering in preparation for holiday lets.

This involved not only decluttering but also checking every item carefully with the client and removing anything personal or valuable.

Antiques were either placed into storage, which I arranged, or delivered safely to family members in London.

Some items were sold, which I also helped organise.

A Home Ready for Its Next Chapter

Around a year later, I returned to help split the contents between two properties while also organising storage for both households.

This time, the family wanted to lease the property on a long-term basis, so we reviewed what could stay, what needed to go into storage, and what additional items were required.

Four months ago, my client contacted me once again. This time, she wanted everything brought back from storage, unpacked and organised throughout the property.

After a ten-hour shift, I had unpacked more than 50 boxes, removed all the packaging and grouped items into the correct rooms to make things easier when she returned to the UK.

I also took plenty of photographs, so she knew exactly where important belongings had been placed.

More Than Just Tidying Up

To me, offering a whole-house decluttering service is not just about tidying cupboards.

It’s about taking a deep dive into every nook and cranny, helping clients let go of what no longer serves them while creating homes that feel calmer, lighter and easier to live in.
