The reasons why it’s ‘back to school’ for me

I think it’s true to say that when you get to a certain age you start to lose some of the youthful confidence you once had. That is a normal part of ageing I am told (although I refuse to believe it personally) and, of course, the Menopause certainly plays its part too.

As for myself, I’ve toyed with the idea of getting a part-time job to support ‘The Lifestyle Concept’ which is more of a social enterprise than a money-making exercise at this point in time. I’ve trolled through the job advertisements and that’s when my heart sunk into my boots. I simply don’t have the qualifications which seem to be required for a variety of jobs. This isn’t because I can’t manipulate a spreadsheet or work my way around a PowerPoint presentation or Word document. I know I can turn my hand to many things as I ran my own successful business with my husband for over 12 years and would do the administration, marketing and attend sales meetings and exhibitions.

With those musings in my head I googled about a month ago for ‘Adult Learning in Poole and Bournemouth’ and it suggested the wonderful ‘Skills & Learning Bournemouth Dorset Poole‘. So I phoned them up and after a brief conversation with a lovely lady called Carol Briggs, I set up a meeting with Nicky who is part of the Careers Advice & Guidance (Ansbury). Nicky and I got on like a house on fire, she had to stop me talking of course (!) but she quickly established what I needed and wanted. A piece of paper! This course will cost me around £280 but it’ll be so worth it.

In the New Year I’ll have an enrolment day-course to assess my IT skills, and if all is good (I’m confident it will be), I’ll be signing up for a nineteen-week IT course starting in February 2019 and taking place every Thursday afternoon. I can’t wait to start and am really looking forward to it!

Furthermore, I’d like to get up-to-date English and Maths qualifications and again, I’ll be assessed first to be able to start another functional skills course which will again run over approximately nineteen weeks on a set day. This is all government funded which is just amazing!

Lastly, but not least, I am going to apply to go onto a ‘Principles of Business and Administration’ course, which is also fully funded.

At the end of all these courses I’d be fully qualified. I’m doing this for only one person, me!  I’m doing it purely for myself and my own well-being.

Despite my blog about the ‘Wizard of Oz’ not needing a bit of paper to acknowledge his skills and knowing that I have life skills in abundance and the desire to learn in heaps, after all I still want that certificate and qualification. Wish me good luck!

With love – always,
